Start with comparable exports

A useful keyword gap starts with a fair comparison. Export organic rankings for your site and up to four competitors from the same provider. Keep the country, device, search engine and ranking snapshot date consistent. A US desktop report and a UK mobile report answer different questions, even when the keywords look identical.

Upload a CSV or TSV, or paste the records. Map the keyword and position columns. Ranking URL and volume are optional for domain comparisons; an exact-page comparison needs the ranking URL. Use integer positions from a ranking export, not Google Search Console average positions. Leave unavailable volume blank instead of entering zero.

Choose competitors that serve the same audience. A specialist publisher can be more useful than a huge general site: its ranking pages are more likely to expose topics your own readers need. For a page-level review, compare equivalent pages, not a product page against an entire domain.

Read the gap correctly

Missing means a keyword appears with a known competitor position but has no record in your target export. It does not confirm that your site has never ranked for that query. A filtered report, an export cap or limited provider coverage can create an apparent gap.

Behind means at least one competitor has a better supplied position than you. Shared includes every keyword present in both your records and a competitor’s, including those marked behind or ahead. Target only shows terms found only in your records. Unknown positions remain unknown; the tool never turns them into an invented rank.

Repeated keywords use the best position supplied for each site. Open a keyword to see its best-ranking URL and other supplied page evidence. Multiple URLs deserve a closer look, but this alone does not establish keyword cannibalization. Search results can legitimately show more than one page from a domain.

Choose what to work on

Start with shared keywords where your page ranks 11-20 and a competitor ranks in the top 10. Read both pages. Does yours answer the question directly? Is an important example missing? Does the competitor offer a comparison, template or firsthand explanation that your page lacks? Those are concrete editing decisions; adding more words is not a strategy by itself.

Then review missing terms that appear across several relevant competitors. Exclude unrelated brand names and topics outside your offer. Check the current search results before deciding whether to update an existing page or create a new one. A query may call for a category, a guide or a tool, rather than another article.

Use reported volume to sort an already-relevant list, not to choose your audience. The tool does not estimate volume or difficulty. Where supplied volume values disagree, it keeps the range visible. Export filtered rows as CSV for your work queue, or download the full JSON report to retain source context and ranking evidence.

What this checks

This is an export comparison, not a live rank tracker. It normalizes keyword case and spacing while keeping accents and different word forms distinct. It checks mapped ranking URLs against the selected domain, hostname or exact page, and reports excluded rows. It does not crawl those URLs, identify search intent automatically or promise traffic from a gap.

The plugin does not store your imports or reports. Shared abuse protection keeps a salted IP hash, tool identifier and usage date; hosting and security-provider policies apply separately. Download the report before clearing the comparison.

For link-source overlap, use the Backlink Gap Tool. For a page that may have crawl or indexing restrictions, use the Indexability Checker.

Questions

Does the tool look up competitor keywords?

It compares the organic keyword exports you provide. It does not fetch search results or query Ahrefs, Semrush or another keyword database.

Can I use Google Search Console exports?

Not for this comparison. Search Console average position is an aggregate, not a single organic ranking snapshot. Use compatible organic ranking exports from the same provider, country, device, search engine and date.

Should every missing keyword become a new page?

No. Check relevance and search intent first. An existing page may already cover the topic, and a filtered or incomplete export can create an apparent gap. Review the ranking URLs before creating or changing content.
